Crafts
From myself and others

Aside from my pottery and my music, I try to do other crafty-type things.

Karl's Drinking Horn
My (version 1.0) drinking horn is one of the things I'm proud of.  I bought it from Tandy Leather, and a whole roll of grey suede thong, and went home to make a horn.  After getting all the crud out and sanding on it, I (with the help of my lovely wife) managed to weave the thong around it.  From a ring at the top, there are three long strands threaded through.  One half goes one way, the other half the other, at about a 45 degree angle, and where they meet they form a knotwork pattern.  As the diameter of the horn decreases, these meeting increase in frequency until you get to the bottom of the horn, where they all pass through another ring and begin being braided in three pairs.  Then, I reattached them back at the top ring, completing the loop.  This whole thing symbolized the Nornir weaving the Web of Wyrd, cradling those things about which we care most, all working together in one cycle of many functions to make something that at first glance would appear normal.  The diamond pattern is intentional, as I am a Freysgodthi, and this is one of his symbols (the Ingwaz).  This symbolizes the connection of fate with nature, the course of life with its beginning and end, and the cyclical patterns found therein.  For those curious, the horn is about 18" (45 cm) long about the spiral and holds about 16 ounces (0.5 liters).

I am in the process of re-wrapping the horn (version 2.0) in hemp cord, as I have found the suede has stretched and become loose, and I will post pictures of it when it is complete.

Happy Fat Guy Brewery
I am the proprietor and operator of the Happy Fat Guy Brewery, Indianapolis, Indiana.  Our home-brewing laws allow us 100 gallons per adult per household, and I don't even come anywhere near this limit.  Anyway, I do like to brew, and I'm rather handy at it, if I do say so myself.  If you drop by, I'll be happy to ply you with a pint, or share some with you at a moot or blot.  I can't sell it, since that requires a license, and I can't ship it, since that's illegal (to ship alcohol across the Indiana border).

Karl's Mad Skillz on a 3-D Solid Modeler (Mechanical Design Software)
Tyr/Freyja knotwork I drew with SDRC's I-DEAS CAD/CAM/CAE software.  My brother is a Tyrsman and his wife is a Freyja's Gythja -- I drew this for their anniversary, and hope to find somebody with CNC equipment to mill it out of wood.  Any suggestions?

Karl the Gaming Geek
As you may well have guessed, I have been known to flop a card (M:tG) or roll a die (WH40K, AD&D 1st Ed., Shadowrun 1st and 2nd Ed., Cyberpunk, V:tM, Palladium, Top Secret) from time to time.  This also means I picked up a hobby in paining miniatures.  Here's a recent fantasy figure (25mm scale) front and back.

Karl's Brother: The Artist of the Family
I'm kind of the science and math kid, being a mechanical engineer.  My brother is truly the artist.  He draws, paints (and on a computer, too!), makes chainmail, plays bass guitar, and likes to augment existing sharp and pointy things.  He gets something in trade, decorates it, and then re-sells or re-trades, or just keeps it.  Knives, daggers, spears, ghurkas, swords, sheaths, scabbards, axes, and even a drinking horn or book cover.  The favored motifs are those of his patron, Tyr.

The Wood-Wight
This little wood wight was not carved by me.  When I was young, we would go to Cook's Forest in Pennsylvania for vacations.  I met an old man there who was selling these.  I asked him how he carved these, and he just told me he was removing the wood around a face that was already there.  The actual size of this is about 2.5" (6 cm) tall.
